vaccine vial that has COVID-19 on the label.

Posted November 4, 2021

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recommends children ages 5 and older receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Johns Hopkins Medicine encourages all families with eligible children to get the appropriate COVID-19 vaccine.

  • Children ages 5–11 years can receive the Pfizer pediatric COVID-19 vaccine (10mcg dose).
  • Adolescents 12 and older can receive the Pfizer adult COVID-19 vaccine (30mcg dose).

Doses are based on age, not weight.

COVID-19 Vaccine Boosters and Additional Doses Update

Posted October 25, 2021

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now recommend COVID-19 boosters or additional doses for individuals who meet certain criteria.

A booster or additional vaccine dose is recommended if you:

  • Received the Janssen/Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least two months ago and are age 18 or older.

  • Received both required doses of either the Moderna or the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, with the second dose at least six months ago, and:
    • Are age 65 or older
    • Are age 18 or older and
      • Live in a long-term care facility
      • Have an underlying medical condition that could put you at higher risk of severe COVID-19
      • Work in a location that puts you at high risk of exposure to COVID-19
  • Have a medical condition associated with immunosuppression.

The FDA has determined it is safe to receive a different brand for the booster or additional dose than the brand you initially received.

To help you determine if you are eligible and to schedule an appointment, please read our booster/additional dose information.

Vaccine Availability

People aged 12 – 17 will receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine as this is the only vaccine currently authorized for this age group.

Adults aged 18 and older will receive one of the authorized vaccines. Learn which vaccine is offered at our vaccination sites before you schedule your vaccination.

Johns Hopkins Medicine views all authorized COVID-19 vaccines as highly effective at preventing serious disease, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19. Patients cannot choose which type of vaccine they receive once they arrive but may select a vaccination site that provides their preferred type of vaccine.

Safety Measures

It takes at least two weeks beyond the second dose of vaccine for two-dose regimens and beyond vaccination for one-dose regimens for full protection to develop. Even after full vaccination, infection prevention measures such as wearing a mask, physical distancing and frequent handwashing are still particularly important since you might be able to pick up the virus, carry it and give it to others. Learn more from our infographic, COVID-19 Vaccines: What You Need to Know.

Vaccine Allocation and Distribution

Johns Hopkins Medicine is administering the three COVID-19 vaccines that have received emergency use authorization by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA): Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson. We view all three vaccines as highly efficacious for preventing serious disease, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. Patients ages 12 – 17 can only receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, as this is the only vaccine currently authorized for this age group.

Some locations offer walk-up vaccinations, however scheduled appointments are preferred.

We encourage you to take advantage of all vaccination options available through state and local agencies and organizations. In addition to the following Johns Hopkins COVID-19 vaccination sites, see Maryland's vaccination website for other locations. Some Maryland mass vaccination sites also offer walk-up vaccinations.
